Hey, what's up everybody? It's Octavio Blanco from the Uptown Voices Podcast with some exciting news about the evolution of our show!
After more than a year of publishing the Uptown Voices Podcast with your support, we’re launching a new multimedia platform. We're calling it Uptown Voices, and it’s where you can find written articles, breaking news, investigations, podcasts, videos, community resources, and original series.
What does this mean for our podcast? Nothing much. Our podcast production schedule won’t change. Led and I will continue dropping two episodes each week featuring people from Uptown who are doing amazing work in the community and discussing the latest hyperlocal, national and international news events from our perspective as Uptowners. The only difference you might notice: instead of recording episodes ahead of time, we’ll be doing mostly lives!
This week’s latest Black & Blanco LIVE is the perfect example.
We welcomed Lethy Liriano, the new Executive Director of the Brides’ March to join us. She bravely shared her story of growth and resilience. As a teen, she witnessed the tragic murder of her aunt, Gladys Ricart, killed by her ex-boyfriend on her wedding day. Twenty-five years later, Lethy is leading the @bridesmarch in New York City—an annual change-making movement that honors and supports victims of domestic violence it kicks off this Saturday from the Holyrood church on the Corner of 179th and Fort Washington Ave. People will begin gathering at 8 a.m. The march begins at 10 a.m.

You may have noticed that lately I’ve been reporting news more quickly and hitting the streets more often. I’ll be doing my best to keep this up.
For example, this past week, I hustled to report two big stories that caused a stir in our community.
Rome Wasn’t Built In a Day… Neither Was The Riverside Drive Viaduct
We were the first to report that after two years of abandonment, construction on the Riverside Drive Viaduct has resumed. Diggers and hard-hats miraculously appeared at the worksite just two days after we highlighted residents’ complaints on Black & Blanco LIVE.
Our story was picked up by Pix11 news, too!
You Want to Build a Highschool … Where?!
We also quickly brought you an update on plans to build a massive Zeta Charter High School on the vacant lot located at the corner of Broadway and 181st street (where the old RKO Coliseum theater used to be before it was demolished in 2020). The intersection is considered the Times Square of Washington Heights…and the issue is sharply dividing our community.
I Testified Before the Members of the NY City Council
On Tuesday I addressed the committee on government operations about how the Mamdani administration interacts with digital media influencers. I don’t consider myself an influencer. I’m a digital journalist and a digital-impact leader Uptown. Check out my testimony below.

Después de más de un año de publicar el podcast de Uptown Voices gracias a su apoyo, estamos lanzando una nueva plataforma multimedia. La llamamos Uptown Voices, y será el espacio donde podrán encontrar artículos escritos, noticias de última hora, investigaciones, podcasts, videos, recursos para la comunidad y series originales.
¿Qué significa esto para nuestro podcast? La verdad, no mucho. Nuestro calendario de producción no cambiará. Led y yo seguiremos lanzando dos episodios por semana destacando a personas de Uptown que están haciendo un trabajo increíble en la comunidad, y debatiendo las últimas noticias hiperlocales, nacionales e internacionales desde nuestra perspectiva como "Uptowners". Excavadoras y cascos de construcción aparecieron milagrosamente en el lugar solo dos días después de que resaltamos las quejas de los residentes en Black & Blanco LIVE.
