A new Uptown Voices podcast episode has dropped this morning and it’s a banger where we explore the roots of uptown Hip Hop with legendary producer Oscar Peña (AKA: Super O) and Jean Shepherd (AKA: John, AKA: Navegante).

This episode is a treasure trove of insights about their beginnings, the culture, and the evolution of their artistry.

Super O talks about the reality of making music in Washington Heights in the 90s. With the streets calling, it was a constant battle between hitting the studio to hang with legendary rappers or going out to make $2,000. "Whoever tells you that you can be a hustler and an artist at the same time is a liar."

Plus, they break down how targeted marketing by their agency DOF NYC, which didn’t just engage in blanket “Latino marketing” understood the nuance of the market and sold out the Romeo Santos show in Houston. Volunteering to teach future media creators, they discuss meeting GW High School's Principal Russo and why she deserves her respect. That work helped a local student Kimberly go from performing at a school talent show to meeting her idol and ultimately earning an official IMDB credit on Disney+!

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Watch this inspiring episode today!

Parking Nightmares / Parking Solutions?

United Palace was the hot ticket on Wednesday night, but there wasn’t a blockbuster film or broadway musical in sight. Instead, the foyer of the palace was filled with a standing room only crowd of neighbors sounding off to CB 12, elected officials, and representatives from the NYPD, DOT, and Sanitation Department on the awfulness of parking in Inwood and Washington Heights. Residents spoke on how film shoots regularly take precious spaces, Columbia University sporting events create double parking trapping residents into spaces, charter school drop offs snarl traffic, and myriad other issues.

City Council Member Carmen De La Rosa was in attendance and described the resident parking bill which she created with a cohort of other NY City Council members and Shaun Abreu, the Council’s majority leader and transportation committee chair.

New York City Council Introduction 529 (Int. No. 529-2026), sponsored by De La Rosa along with co-sponsors Farah N. Louis and Crystal Hudson, proposes the creation of a residential parking permit system in Northern Manhattan. Under this proposed bill, the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) would be tasked with building out a customized residential parking permit program specifically for community members living in these neighborhoods.

But De La Rosa stressed that the City Council can’t act alone in pushing this plan forward. Support from the State Assembly is required. Albany holds the power to create the program for our neighborhoods. She asked for the community to lobby local State Representatives as well as the office of State Senator Robert Jackson. Neighbors who want this program to become a reality should reach out to their State representatives in the months leading up to Albany’s legislative session, which begins in January.
