WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — This Saturday, October 17, is a big day Uptown and across the United States. It’s No Kings Day and protests are planned in communities all over America, including Uptown, in Washington Heights, Harlem and the South Bronx.
The main Uptown event will be the protest march organized by Inwood Indivisible and Rezo, an immigrant rights group, according to Laura Daigen-Ayala, a spokesperson for Inwood Indivisible’s Saturday action. She added that unlike other No Kings protests which are simply intended to get out the early vote, this one will also be focused on immigration, and the actions of this administration against immigrant communities like ours.
March Route
The march is scheduled to begin on 181st street and Broadway. From there, marchers will walk east to Saint Nicholas Ave., and then proceed south to 167th street, where they will congregate at the plaza next to the Alianza Dominicana building.
Anger In the Community
The current mood uptown is angry. Many neighbors are still furious after Oscar Belgal was shot in the neck by undercover ICE officers as he was picking up his daughter from school while his five-year-old-son sat in the back seat of his car. The shooting is just the latest example of the dangerous tactics the financially-flush rogue agency is using in its mass-apprehension-and-deportation campaign directed against immigrant communities across America by the President of the United States, Donald Trump. There were heated protests uptown on the night of the shooting, with some clashes between police and protesters.
Because of the heightened mood, protest organizers are not allowing children to march. They are meeting with the 34th precinct on Thursday evening to go over safety. Instead, they say kids and parents should head down to the plaza next to the Alianza Dominicana building, where they will be able to participate in arts and crafts. The kids may also march from the playground where they’ll be painting and drawing to join the main event in the plaza.
If the kids march, it’ll be the cutest protest in America!
Speakers and Event Details
The main post-protest event will include tabling, music, and speeches. A spokesperson for Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic candidate for Congress to represent District 13 confirmed that she will be speaking. Also confirmed to be among speakers is Linda Tigani, Chairperson of the New York City Commission on Racial Equity (NYC CORE). It’s unclear if other elected officials will attend the event.
Among the organizations tabling at the event will be the Democratic Socialists of America, Inwood indivisible and other groups offering immigration and voting information. There will also be tables for kids to do arts and crafts activities, music, and more.
Other No Kings Events Uptown
There will be a Hudson River Brigade “Bridge Action” between 10 and 11:30 on an undisclosed overpass bridge.
“We serve up joyful resistance and maximum visibility to car traffic on an overpass bridge in Upper Manhattan,” the group said on its event post on the No Kings website.
There will be sidewalk chalking at Franz Sigel Park in the Bronx from 8 to 10 a.m.
And there will be a group of people on the 232nd Street Henry Hudson Overpass in Riverdale holding signs for passing motorists.
“Let's stand out on the 232 St Overpass and show passing motorists how Voting Early is critical this year!!! Bring a sign and a noise maker,” the group said on its event post on the No Kings website.
Although it’s not necessary to sign up for the protest and the events, organizers encourage neighbors interested in participating to do so on the No Kings website. There is a map showing all the events happening on Saturday all across the United States.
